چکیده

Although there is a general consensus on which are the leading world cities, there is no agreedupon roster covering world cities below the highest level. This paper reports the construction of an inventory of world cities based upon their level of advanced producer services. Global service centres are identified and graded for accountancy, advertising, banking/finance and law. Aggregating these results produces a roster of 55 world cities at three levels: 10 Alpha world cities, 10 Beta world cities and 35 Gamma world cities. These are found to be largely geographically concentrated in three “globalization arenas”, northern America, western Europe and Pacific Asia.  1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved

A shift sequence based approach for nurse scheduling and a new benchmark dataset

This paper investigates an adaptive constructive method for solving nurse rostering problems. The constraints considered in the problems are categorised into three classes: those that are sequence related, those that are nurse schedule related and those that are roster related. We propose a decomposition approach to construct solutions that consists of two stages: 1) to construct high quality s...

Urbanisation and the State of Infrastructure in the Developing World Cities

The dominant policy decision emphasis on urbanisation problem in developing countries is itsrate of growth, ignoring the level of provision of resources, including the infrastructure, to match this growth. It isagainst this background that the paper undertook a broad analysis of the state of infrastructure in developing countriesusing such indices as access and quality of water supply, sanitati...

Nurse rostering using fuzzy logic: A case study

In this paper, we used the fuzzy set theory for modeling flexible constraints and uncertain data in nurse scheduling problems and proposed a fuzzy linear model for nurse rostering problems. The developed model can produce rosters that satisfy hospital objectives, ward requirements and staff preferences by satisfying their requests as much as possible. Fuzzy sets are used for modeling demands of...

A two-phase heuristic and a lexicographic rule for improving fairness in personnel rostering

A fair allocation of workload to people is crucial for securing job satisfaction. Researchers have introduced numerous objectives and algorithms to represent and improve fairness in personnel rostering problems. These approaches should not ignore the roster quality that is influenced by personnel rostering constraints, such as maximum working times, minimum rest times, etc. The present paper pr...

Needed: Global Collaboration for Comparative Research on Cities and Health

Over half of the world’s population lives in cities and United Nations (UN) demographers project an increase of 2.5 billion more urban dwellers by 2050. Yet there is too little systematic comparative research on the practice of urban health policy and management (HPAM), particularly in the megacities of middle-income and developing nations. We make a case for creating a global database on citie...
